Sound #5

As I was nearing the end of my walk, I had yet again, planted my microphones on the branches of the trees... This time, I had seen squirrels. I was hoping to at least capture a snicker or two amongst two squirrels I had seen.. Instead, I found myself trying to capture the sounds, yet save my microphones as well! As I was recording, two squirrels had started to chase each other up a nearby tree. You can hear the branches rustling amongst one another. You can also hear my footsteps at the end trying to egg the squirrels on some more.. Unfortunately that had run away for me to capture more of the sounds of them chasing each other.

As I kept walking, and as I had headed away from the roads, I wanted to see the effect of obtaining sounds from a higher elevation. Rather than lying my microphones on the shrubs on the ground, I planted them on a tree branch. I was hoping for more of a whistling echo with the winds and a calmer sound.. instead, the calmness I was looking for was interrupted by an airplane above me! The footsteps that you hear towards the end, were of me walking around my microphone.. The snow was half melted, but crisp enough to capture the sounds of my footsteps!

Before heading directly deep into the Kettle Moraine Park, I quickly noticed how distinct the bird calls were. This was my first initiative to start recording. While still on the beginning of the path, I set my recorder on some shrubs near the ground. Here, I wanted to record just the sounds of the birds. I was uncertain at the time how well they would sound. While I was recording, cars from the highway just across the park were speeding past. At first, I did not like that it was interfering with my bird sounds.. But, when I listened to the recording later, I liked the fact that the transition from recording in the city, to the park, went more smoothly that I had thought it would. This is what I heard:

While I was in the city, I was also able to capture the sounds of a struggling bus! It was just about that time, that the bus was leaving.. You can hear the struggling accelerations of the bus near the end of the clip! I took this recording from a distance to capture a more distant sound, rather than my previous clip of the construction. Capturing the bus sounds from a further distance allowed me to capture sounds around that area, whereas with the construction, the machines blocked out any outer sounds.

As you may note, I started my recordings in the city. I wanted to listen for city sounds, to be able to later compare it with the sounds of the wilderness. There was a construction site going on where the loud sounds of the machines were almost deafening. Is was that loud ruckus that I wanted to record. If you listen, the repeated drilling sound is a deep bass sound that almost sounds like it's echoing.
